POTY2022 INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE WITH CAMLESS GAS DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM

Project 2.5 CLTT - From zero to HERO

The need for the project
From the beginning, I want to mention that I am personally a lover of high-performance internal combustion engines. The pressure from the authorities on internal combustion engines through regulations and laws led me to think about how I could design a low capacity engine with dynamic performance similar to one with high cylinder capacity but also taking into account consumption and pollutant emissions. In short, how to design a small engine with low consumption and high power - modernizing the conventional internal combustion engine.

About the project
The project aims to design an internal combustion engine that brings amazing performance both in terms of consumption and emissions and in terms of power and torque. This engine was designed to be mounted on sports cars, including high-capacity engines, being considered an intelligent down-sizing engine due to new technology (present below).

When and where?
The 2.5 CLTT project was born in Ankara, Turkey when I was studying at Gazy University (2020) as an Erasmus+ student. The project continued and continues to develop within the University of Pitesti Romania. (2021-Present).

2.5 CLTT
This name refers primarily to the fact that it is an internal combustion engine with a capacity of 2500cc [2.5] which has 5 cylinders arranged in line, but the evolution of this engine is the gas distribution system, the classic system is completely replaced with a CAMLESS gas distribution system [CL]. Finally [TT] symbolizes the new supercharging system of this internal combustion engine which consists of two turbochargers mounted in parallel but at the same time independent on each gallery of a single cylinder.

What is CAMLESS?
A camless or free-valve piston engine is an engine that has poppet valves operated by means of electromagnetic, hydraulic, or pneumatic actuators instead of conventional cams. Actuators can be used to both open and close valves, or to open valves closed by springs or other means.

Our CAMLESS system
Consists of an Electro Hydro-Pneumatic actuator which is individually mounted on each intake or exhaust valve of the internal combustion engine allowing the operation of the valve opening-closing time, valve timing and valve lift (full valve control) to maximum due to the electronically control via a computer. 

The camless system comes with several advantages such as:
- Increased low end torque and power
- Decreased fuel consumption
- Reduced Emissions
- Simplified aftertreatment

This project was design using both CATIA V5 and 3DExperience platform.
