POTY 2022 - VR OmniDirectional Treadmill

Hello everyone, my name is Akshat Bhagat from Punjab Engineering College and I have designed an OmniDirectional Treadmill for virtual reality simulation.

To achieve an immersive virtual reality (VR) environment, omnidirectional treadmills (ODTs) allow users to perform locomotion in any direction. However, existing ODTs are heavy and complex, and operate at low speeds. To overcome this problem, I have designed a simpler version of an omnidirectional treadmill that uses small-sized ball transfer units laid on the foot platform of the ODT. Several ball transfer units are laid in such a way that it produces relative motion between the foot platform and treadmill mat. To take the input from the treadmill for determining the user's position in a simulated world, a CMOS sensor can be used.

I got the inspiration for this project from the Hollywood film “Ready Player One” where it showed an ODT and was used to simulate a VR game. To design more immersive locomotion, this locomotive interface system should allow the user to arbitrarily change not only the walking speed but also the walking direction. Such features would allow a user to participate more actively in VR experiences, such as military training programs, physical education programs, disaster preparedness training, and rehabilitation programs.

Thank you for your interest.
