Fisheries are the primary source of livelihood for several communities. Fishing in India is a major industry employing 14.5 million people and it contributes to 1.07% of the Total GDP of India. Currently most of the aquaculture systems are bio floc systems or pond farming setups. While wild fishing is slowly becoming unsustainable, aquaculture faces the problem of people using incorrect filtration methods which lead to a high mortality rate.
To tackle this problem, we the students of PVG’s College of Engineering and Technology, Pune have built a 3-stage filtration system for freshwater aquaculture or Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) in the connectNEXT program of La fondation Dassault Systems. Our RAS prototype is designed to satisfy various requirements such as compactness, efficiency, longevity and be economical as well.
The culture tank (main fish tank) has a capacity of 1000L which was stocked with 150 fish. The stocking density comes out to be almost thrice as compared to bio floc systems. The three stages of filtration are Mechanical Filtration, Biological Filtration, and Ultraviolet (UV) Filtration. The fish used for the testing of this prototype are monosex tilapia (GIFT).
The 3DExperience platform has provided us with all the tools that we needed to come up with the design as well as complete the analysis of the system. Some of the tools that we have used are 3D Dashboard, 3D Sketch, Xshape, XDesign, Enovia Project Planning and Simulia.
