It might seem simple but the Newton's cradle demonstrates some of the most fundamental laws of physics: conservation of energy, conservation of momentum, and (fairly) elastic collisions.
Q: So, when one ball is dropped, why doesn't the cradle send out two balls at half the speed?
A: Though this would conserve momentum, it wouldn't conserve energy (velocity versus velocity squared).
