Have you ever tried to balance the switch between On and Off position. Its very difficult, but I did achieved it sometimes. At that balanced position, even the slightest movement will cause the button to switch to On or Off. The mechanism used in those switches was something similar to spring toggle mechanism.
Spring Toggle Mechanism: It enables to switch between two states quickly. It maintains that state unless required load is applied on the mechanism.
To hold the end state of the mechanism, the spring is always in tension. The free length of the spring is always less than the length of the spring at any of the end states. Because of that, the blue link does not move instantaneously, when load is applied on it. First the initial tension of the spring is balance, then the extra load is required to take the blue link to the toggle position and a little push to next state. After that, even if the load is removed, the mechanism will still remain in the new state. Again to achieve the other end state, required load need to be applied.
