HOW WE STARTED USING THE 3D EXPERIENCE

FORMULA SAE RACE UP TEAM

As part of the 2022/2023 thanks to the advice of Andrea Esposito, we where able to define a path to start in order to switch fully to the 3D experience platform. Our Aerodynamics Department was already practical with the use of the connection between the platform and CATIA V5 however some more steps where needed in order to be able to extract the maximum from the platform with the whole team

Our team is composed of the Frame Ergonomics department which is in charge of the design of the monocoque and CFRP design and manufacturing. The aerodynamics department which takes care of the design of all the aerodynamic surfaces of the car as well as managing of the PLM inside of our team. The vehicle dynamics and the mechanical structures departments which work jointly on the design of different suspension components as well as extracting maximum performance of the car, as well as the electronics, powertrain and software which manage all the electrical components such as design of PCBs, power management and code integration on the car:

Importing from V5

As you may know dear community there are many ways of importing assemblies into the platform, however it is important to note out when you are dealing with V5 components because some information may be lost if not done the right way.

The most efficient method we identified in order to import components was through the assembly design app, similar to V5. In order to import a component you need to go to Import>Improt from v5> unchek all the things because we found some problems may be from componetns of other years, or that where already inside the platform.

With this way all the links and references do not get lost and is also an amazing way in order to keep modyfiying what you work on.

Another important thing we identified with our team was the use of different collaborative spaces for each department. In the case of having lots of parts, such as the wheel group we decided that it was a good practice to choose more than one collaborative space for this parts, so this could allow us to have more track.

Bookmark Editor

Another fundamental part of tracking our components was the use of the bookmark editor in order to track assemblies. We mostly organize the bookmarks according to each department where we then add a bookmark for the assembly to work. We usually use one assembly per department so it was really straightforward, the simpler the better. However, when there are some parts that are not related to simulation or do not go straight onto the car we tend to create a different assembly, where we give full use of the bookmark.

This year the team has the goal of experimenting with tags, so a follow up comment will arrive on regards.

Product Structure Editor and Collaborative Lifecycle

I would define this two apps as the saviors there are really useful for modifying getting information from certain parts as well as understanding the progress. This apps allowed us to play and to organize assemblies as best as well as deleting parts where we might have certain issues.

On the following weeks we will be posting on how we implement high parametrization inside of our team as well how we have structured the project management part using the platform.
