It all started with a simple spark: a deep curiosity for the world of robotics and embedded systems. I've always been fascinated by how automation can shape our world, and I wanted to do more than just study it, I wanted to build it. My goal was to design a robotic arm, inspired by the precision of ABB models, that could one day assist in real-world assembly and manufacturing. This is the story of how that idea came to life on my screen.
The journey began in my CAD software, where every line and curve was a step closer to reality. The process was a mix of intense focus and creative problem-solving. While many parts came together smoothly, the wrist joint became a real challenge. Getting the multi-axis articulation just right, ensuring a full range of motion without any component collisions, was a complex puzzle that took many attempts to solve.
But with challenge comes reward. There's no feeling quite like the "click" of that final mate constraint in the assembly, the moment when dozens of hours of work culminate into such complex parts sliding perfectly into place. It’s in those moments that a collection of digital files truly starts to feel like a machine. As a final touch, I added my own name to the arm. It’s more than just a label; it’s a signature of ownership and pride in the work.
One of the most crucial learning moments came during the analysis phase. When I ran the mass properties calculation, the result was a surprise: the arm was significantly heavier than I had anticipated. An overweight design would require larger, more expensive motors and could be slower and less efficient. This was a valuable lesson in practical engineering ,a reminder that a design isn't complete until it's optimized for real-world physics.
This project has been an incredible journey from a curious idea to a detailed digital prototype. The next step is to go back and refine the design, optimizing materials and shapes to reduce the mass. From there, who knows? Maybe a 3D-printed prototype is on the horizon. For now, I'm proud of this digital creation and the invaluable lessons learned along the way.
