If the cube starts to fall when you throw the ball, where should you aim to hit the cube every time?
At the cube! Both objects are falling with the same acceleration (due to gravity) acting on the vertical components of their motion. So, in any given time, both objects fall by the same vertical distance, despite the fact that the cube is falling straight down and the ball is moving from left to right.
This is the classic 'the monkey and the hunter' physics demonstration, though, of course, no live monkeys are ever used!
