3DPXL – A large-format 3D Printer at Trier University of Applied Sciences | #VirtualStoryteller

Hello 3DEXPERIENCE Edu | Students Community – I am excited to present you my project using 3DEXCITE!

Description:

The presented product is the so called “3DPXL”. It is a large-format 3D Printer, which is currently developed in the department of engineering and technology at our university as an experimental platform for project-based learning. It offers the possibility of printing filaments as well as pellets with a temperature of up to 450°C. Therefore, it is capable of printing all common 3D printing materials, such as PLA, ABS, Nylon and PETG.

The goal of my project was to complete the mostly finished 3D representation of the printer to create an interactive experience of the digital twin. The focus was to showcase the different functions of our 3D printer and to give a unique insight into the components and their interactions with each other.

Creation Process:

As a first step, I used the app “Project Planning” in my 3DEXPERIENCE Dashboard to gain an overview of every step I need to work on to finish my project intime.

The second step was to create the missing parts in the 3D data like exterior parts, for example the covers, and minor parts on the inside. To create these parts I used the apps “Assembly Design”, “Generative Shape Design” and “Part Design”.

The third step of my project was to create the experience using the app “Creative Experience” and “Human Design”. My focus was on the functionality of the extruders and on creating an intuitive user experience through interactive storytelling.

Summary:

The purpose of my project is to have a quick and easy way of presenting the current stage of development to new students and everyone who is interested in our research on the 3DPXL. That way we are able to implement e-Learning to give a good understanding of the printer. The second important use case is to attract new students for the printer to realise future projects and to gain new participants in our Laboratory for Digital Product Development and Manufacturing (LDPF).

The big challenges of the project were to create the logic behind the buttons and on the different camera angles and the changes in-between them.

I enjoyed working on this project and I learned a lot while exploring the apps within 3DEXCITE. Based on the good basic training in 3DEXPERIENCE at our university I was able to familiarise myself quickly with the app through the help of the user assistance.
