Regulator for Alternate Current Motors (Patent No. 390,820)

Nikola Tesla's Regulator for Alternate Current Motors introduced an innovative way to control the speed, torque, and direction of AC motors through electromagnetic induction. Instead of wasting energy with mechanical regulators or electrical resistance, Tesla designed a movable induction regulator that adjusts the magnetic coupling between primary and secondary coils, providing smooth and efficient motor control. This invention played a key role in making alternating current motors practical for industrial applications.

The regulator uses stationary primary coils and a rotating secondary coil mounted within a magnetic core. As the secondary coil is rotated, the magnetic coupling changes, increasing or decreasing the induced current supplied to the motor. Rotating the coil further can even reverse the current phase, allowing the motor to change its direction of rotation while maintaining efficient operation.

The CAD model demonstrates the regulator assembly, including the laminated magnetic frame, primary windings, rotating secondary coil, and adjustment mechanism. The simulation illustrates how changing the coil position varies the magnetic flux, enabling smooth speed regulation and directional control with minimal energy loss.
