So, I started using smart components recently and it´s been a painful experience so far. It seems to work well for smart parts (for example, I made my hexagonal rivet nuts smart) but if I want to use more complex assemblies (more features and more components), it just does not seem to work fine. Either this or I am not doing something right.

I am trying to "smart" the mounting of an HVAC compressor with hexagonal rivet nuts and bolts and the creation of the hexagonal cuts on the underlying sheet metal base.

Constraining  the rivets and the cuts is quite demanding in terms of mouse clicks so I would rather do it once and forget about it if I can.

Adding the three hexagonal cuts in the base (in the actual assembly I am working on) works fine. Once I try to add the rivets and the nuts it does not. 

So, basically my question is: is this too much to ask for ? Or it should work for a simple assembly like this one ?
