Updates [moderated] for several reasons:

1) The necessity for manually backing up, re-applying preferences ( which covers less than we imagine, no custom resources etc )

2) The tedious manual process for non administrator setups OS granting permissions for every resource location

The example we have from other software ecosystems however is quite different. Changing Android mobile phones for instance, is now one of the most painless hardware / software upgrade processes in existence.

Can we have this kind of automatic backup, install / upgrade / service packs for Solidworks? After 20 years I imagine anything is possible?
