Chess Game

This chess set was designed and fabricated at the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab FabLab, leveraging CATIA for advanced digital modeling and lattice design, and DELMIA for CNC toolpath generation. All components—including the chess pieces, chessboard, custom foam insert, and acrylic enclosure—were produced using digital fabrication techniques such as 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining.

Design & Aesthetics:

Lattice Design Process

All chess pieces were designed in CATIA.

Lattice structures were applied for aesthetic purposes, with each chess piece featuring a different lattice type to create a unique visual identity.

While designing the lattice in CATIA, planes were created to partition each chess piece, applying the lattice only to the middle section. The lattice also features variable thicknesses, ensuring smoother transitions and a more refined appearance.

Manufacturing & Materials:

Both the chessboard and pieces were produced using 3D printing technologies.

Chess Board - Assembling process

The chessboard was designed like a puzzle, allowing precise printing of the black and white colors used for the pieces.

Chess Board - Finalized

For branding, certain chessboard squares were designed and 3D-printed in dual colors to include the 3DEXPERIENCE Lab and 3DEXCITE logos directly into the board.

Foam laser cutting timelapse

A custom foam insert was laser cut to enable precise placement of each piece.

3DEXPERIENCE Lab and 3DEXCITE logos were engraved onto the foam surface.

Copper CNC Process

To enhance tactile quality and overall perception:

Circular copper inserts were CNC machined (using DELMIA-generated toolpaths) and integrated into the base of each chess piece, increasing weight and providing a premium feel.

An acrylic box was designed with interlocking corners for improved structural integrity and durability.

The lid was personalized with chess piece silhouettes, along with 3DEXPERIENCE Lab, Dassault Systèmes, 3DEXCITE, and former 3DEXCITE CEO Tom Acland’s name.

A custom 3D-printed hinge mechanism designed in CATIA ensures that the lid remains fixed at a 90° angle when opened.
