A Quick Fix for Puzzle Lovers

If you are a jig saw puzzle enthusiast, you will appreciate this 3D printed project. Our events coordinator loves to put puzzles out in her area for employees to enjoy when they take breaks. She thought that it would be helpful to have a lid holder next to the puzzle table. We thought that it would be fun to put some branding on the piece.

So I hopped into xDesign and modeled up a quick solution. I started by grabbing a high resolution and high contrast version of the 3DS logo. I imported the image into the model and scaled it appropriately. Then I used the Image to Sketch command to get me a sketch version of the logo. I wanted to print the colored logo face-down on the print bed. This way, I used less filament and got a crisp and clean logo on that face. To help me get the piece off the print bed, I added a small chamfer around that face. Since I didn't need the logo on both sides, I kept the other side open to reduce filament even more. I did add more material at the base of the stand to shift the center of mass down hoping to help with the balance. I also tilted the slot for the cap far enough into the logo to keep the box lid over the center of the base. Laying these features out in CAD, specifically in the sketch, made it super simple to solve. I only had to print one version to get everything to work. Even the color combo looked great!

Here's the 3DXML if you want to check it out. I've included a STEP if you would like to print one out yourself. Enjoy!
