Modelica Conference 2025

The 16th Modelica and FMI conference was hosted in Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts - Switzerland.

I share here some aspects of interest.

Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSLU)

1. Dates and numbers

1.1 History

  • 2000 : 1st conference started in, and was hosted in Sweden
  • 2006 : 3DS acquisition of Dynasim Sweden
  • [2008, 2012] : creation of FMI standard – Modelisar project
  • [2018, 2021]: creation of eFMI standard – EMPHYSIS project
  • 2023 : SSP standard appearing
  • 2025 : SSP Layered standards appearing

1.2 2025 edition

16th conference was done in September 2025.

  • 2.5 days
  • 310 participants
  • 80 presentations, > 100 candidate papers& presentations submitted,
  • ~ 12 vendor sessions
  • 10 tutorials
  • book of papers : to come soon, 2023 proceedings was 800 pages

2. Some highlights

Content is a mix of scientific (majority) + tool vendors + industrials 'adoption, lessons learned and perspectives' (less numerous ).

  • After Modelica langage, FMI is still the most illustrated theme, with 10 dedicated tracks
  • SSP (System Structure and Parameterizationgets an increasing visibility, esp. with already an industrial view, it had2 dedicated tracks
  • New layers standards are appearing, named LS-xxx : position above SSP, appearing for traceability, sensivity analysis, bus communication, …
  • Roundtable discussion about value of open standards gathered : MA chairman (Dirk Zimmer.), Siemens IS (Clément Coïc, Technology Cluster Lead – Digital Mechatronics, Siemens Healthineers.), NVIDIA (Adam Moravanszky, Senior Director Simulation Technology), ASAM (Marius Dupuis, CEO, ASAM e.V.), BOSCH (Hans-Martin Heinkel, Project Leader prostep SmartSE, and Bosch expert in MBSE and simulation-based engineering), LNBL (Michael Wetter, Computational Senior
    Scientist, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory)
  • 'Curiosity' Modiator research tool : web app, for tablets, enables a quick discovering of modeling, could reach students, source : Hilding ElmqvistMartin Otter (Modelica founders & former chairman of the community )

3. Modelica Association and community

Modelica Association organisation

Extending the community

Situation and needs

  • Modelica is now consolidated and works across multiple tools which increases the value of learning it.
  • Learning Modelica is not easy and the entry hurdle can be quite steep
  • Our official teaching material has though become dated.
  • We want to update the material.
  • Goal is also to give teachers and educators a better place in the association.
  • Teaching can also be related with FMI, etc.

Comment : There is a need to go more to the students community, but the plan (how to proceed) was not so much presented.

4. Conference content

Some selected content is presented here.

4.0 Themes

As listed in the programme :

  • standards : Modelica, FMI, SSP, Layered Standards, language
  • technical : properties, AI, Credible Simulation CSP, Optimization, FMI in embedded systems, Workflows and SE, methods and tools
  • domains : Power systemsThermal Chemics, Medical, Robotics, Digital Twin, Buildings, Energy, Pumps & Vapour, Maritime, Control, Fuel Cell, Automotive, Aero

4.1 Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Modelica + standards are complementary

MBSE (architecture , sysML, and governance , processes etc …) & Systems ModSim (Modelica & related standards) are now seen complementary.

This was illustrated by several industrial presentations, for instance by BOSCH, AVL, SAAB, Dassault Aviation, Airbus, DENSO.

Dassault Aviation - MBSE & Modelica/FMI

Airbus - situation, needs, challenges

BOSCH Credible Process - Tools, standards, workflow

AVL + BOSCH - prostep IVIP for Smart SE

4.2 Articifial Intelligence is here

AI is visible with several presentations which is not surprising, but not so much.

But still the Modelica Conference focus remains mainly on the usuals themes : ie. Modelica language, libraries, standards, industry view

Physics Enhanced Neural ODEs - Uni AUgsburg
Towards Integration of PeN-ODEs in a Modelica-based workflow

4.3 3DS participation

3DS contributed to a large content : tutorials, tool vendor session, technical papers and presentations, demonstrators.

List of 3DS presentations, tutorials, talks

4.3.1 BMS demonstrator

We presented a Battery Management System (BMS) demonstrator at the booth ; where people could interactively play with.

The catch with the demonstrator is, that we deployed an off-the-shelf battery cell model from our Battery library as virtual sensor on an Arduino Uno

The virtual sensor is used to predict the cell core temperature, such that we can limit power requests if the cell heats up to much.

This demo is also described in this Modelica Online Community post, and in this CATIA community post (DS internal posts).

4.3.2 Related to OpenSCALING project

To generate innovation in relation with MA standards, collaborative projects are frequently built.

 OpenSCALING project

  • was much visible with >10 slots
  • most of them with CATIA R&D contribution (see the list above )
  • Already valuable results have neen shared
